Shady Practices
By admin | June 27, 2007

The Internet is a very difficult place to moderate and regulate with too much information clogging visibility. Shady business practices are a common theme on the Internet as someone tries to get rich quick. Crimes against the consumer and the unknowing are unethical and should be brought to the public’s attention.
Affiliate Marketing has numerous problems with unfair practices. In a time when there is no true regulation in the industry, it is up to members of the Affiliate Marketing community to question everything. It is great to see people constantly posting at A Best Web in the Network Forums and at 5 Star Affiliate Forums about questionable business practices. Since there are no watchdogs, ordinary affiliates, Affiliate Managers and Network Spokesmen call out and discuss the latest questionable affiliate behavior.
Problems are apparent at every level. Affiliates break merchant rules, SPAM and many other bad affiliate practices. Merchants have fronted as a merchant to gain traffic, so they can send that traffic to their own affiliate sites. Networks (not Share a Sale) allow parasites to wreak havoc on affiliates and their earnings.
It is good to see affiliates coming together to try and clean up the industry. Affiliate Fair Play was launched in an effort to create a level playing ground for affiliates. They have launched an “Affiliate Marketing Testing Service” which is subscription-based, but it allows you access to Quality Assurance Testing Results for AFP for specific traffic generating behaviors of affiliates. As the Internet matures so will Affiliate Marketing, until then everyone keep a watchful eye and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
