A History of Google LawSuits: Part I

I thought it would be fun to go over a history of Google lawsuits. Google has been in business since September of 1998 and has grown into an immense virtual being. What I like to call the “Google Monster”, primed and ready to take over the world, one computer at a time.

Throughout their history they have broken down barriers and innovated beyond anyone’s wildest beliefs. You cannot grow as fast and as enormous as Google without stepping on people’s and company’s toes. The Google Monster has done wonderful things for the Internet and for Internet Marketing. However, companies that take risks are sure to get caught in the legal net every once in a while. Below is the first part of a list of important Google Lawsuits, starting with Google Adword Lawsuits. Something to keep in mind as you read these trademark lawsuits … Google has not lost a single lawsuit case in the United States, however, they have suffered defeats in Europe, prompting trademark bidding guidelines to change in Europe in favor of the company owning the trademark.

  • American Blind and WallPaper Factory, Inc sues Google because of other companies bidding on their trademarked name in Search Engine Results. The first of multiple lawsuits against Google’s Adwords has been settled recently for No monetary value, and Google chose not to change trademark guidelines upon this decision.

  • The State of Utah vs. Google – this lawsuit ended up creating a law in Utah titled “Trademark Protection Act” says that companies in Utah cannot bid on trademarked names within their database. The law was created to protect companies and to strengthen brand names and brand recognition.
  • American Airlines vs. Google – another Adwords case centered around bidding on American Airlines’ trademark. The most recent of Adwords’ trademark lawsuits. Experts believe this was a bad decision on American Airlines’ part and that they have no chance of winning this case.

The next installment of Google lawsuits will feature lawsuits that the company has lost, most of which have been in the spotlight. Included will be Google/YouTube vs. Viacom, as well as a high profile click fraud case.
